Husband and Wife design-build duo based in Greenville South Carolina. Having studied architecture in her home country of Finland, Heidi Nyblom and her husband Konrad are blending tasteful Scandinavian design with southern style.

Unison began in 2006, when husband and wife team Robert Segal and Alicia Rosauer returned to the States after a four–year design stint in Finland. Inspired by modern design, nature, architecture, photography, and traditional textiles, the two worked to establish a product line that would bring modern design into practical daily life.

One of the 20th century’s great International Style architects, Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) is renowned for synthesizing the precepts of modernism with expressionist organic forms and natural materials. He is known for his contributions in architecture, furniture, glassware, and textiles. As Aalto is especially revered in his native Finland, one can dine, browse book titles, and see a symphony in spaces of his design—not to mention visit the architect’s former home and studio in Helsinki, Finland.

Based in Fiskars, Finland, Nikari is a manufacturer of high-quality furniture and interiors made of Finnish wood. The company was founded in 1967 by cabinetmaker Kari Virtanen. In 1993, the business moved to Fiskars, and in 1997 it became a limited company. Nikari manufactures and stocks its own line of furniture. In addition, it is actively engaged in various furnishing projects in Finland and overseas. Nikari's in-house cabinetmakers mainly focus on special demanding commissions, design and product development. Today, Nikari is placing special emphasis on collaboration with a new generation of designers. Stock products are manufactured in co-operation with a network of expert Finnish companies. Founded in Iittala, Finland in 1881, Iittala first began as a glass factory. Maija Louekari was born in Oulu, Finland in 1982. Her designs for Marimekko exhibit a marked sense of location, time, and space. She has portrayed both the crowds of metropolises as the fabric Hetkiä and traditional Finnish landscapes as Kaiku, in a highly vivid manner. Her expressive line drawings and large planes of color combine to create a strong impression of three-dimensionality.

Founded in 1951 by Armi Ratia and her husband, Viljo, Marimekko is a Finnish company that designs and manufactures high-quality fabrics and tableware, as well as clothing, bags, and other accessories. Characterized by saturated colors and bold patterns, Marimekko’s products are strong and visually striking, but they do not exclude delicacy or softness. Rather, Marimekko’s designs exist on a line between hard and soft, inspired by both urban elements and natural ones, and by tradition and modernity. Although founded over sixty years ago, Marimekko remains relevant, as it promotes a timeless quality. Fashion and design may have short-lived trends, but Marimekko encourages its designers to create textiles and products that endure, both physically and visually.

Finland's llmari Tapiovaara (1914-1999) was one of the greatest interior architects and designers of his era. Tapiovaara sought new solutions to improve everyday objects. During his long career Tapiovaara created dozens of iconic objects, many of which are still produced today by Artek. Tapiovaara is especially revered for capturing the essence of Finnish identity. Today the contemporary Tapiovaara Family Collection maintains the timeless heritage of a master of Finnish design. Ilmari Tapiovaara graduated in 1937 as interior architect from the department of furniture design of the Central School of Applied Arts in Helsinki. After graduation he obtained the position of assistant for six months at Le Corbusier’s office in Paris. In 1938 Tapiovaara began work as artistic director and designer at Asko Oy, the largest furniture manufacturer in Finland, and in 1941 he was hired as artistic and commercial director for the furniture company Keravan Puuteollisuus Oy. In 1946–47 Tapiovaara designed, together with his wife, Annikki Tapiovaara, furniture for Domus Academica, the new student housing facility in Helsinki. It was in that project the famous Domus Stacking Chair was designed. Ilmari Tapiovaara was a great admirer of Alvar Aalto’s work, and he wanted to create products based on the same ideological premises. Tapiovaara embraced the principle of social equality of functionalism, and felt that architecture was the starting point of his design work. In addition to dozens of chairs and other furniture—mostly intended for public spaces—Tapiovaara also designed interiors for banks, offices, hotels and showrooms.

Karen MacKenna is a Toronto-based writer and photographer with a background in documentary film. Her love of design has been inspired by time spent in Finland, which she calls her second home.

Katja Lindroos is a Helsinki-based journalist and producer who wrote "Fine Finnish" for Dwell's April 2011 issue. Woodnotes is a Finnish design company founded in 1987 by textile designer Ritva Puotila and her son Mikko Puotila. The original concept behind Woodnotes products was to combine artistic creativity inspired by Finland’s rugged nature with advanced technologies to shape of Finnish raw materials: wood and paper.

Magisso is a Finnish production house for Scandinavian design and innovations in kitchenware. They seek to solve problems with their products, with a balance of function, unique design, and user-friendliness. Their first products were the Magisso Cake Server and the Magisso Magnetic Kitchen Cloth Holders.

Ritva Puotila (b. 1935) is a Finnish textile designer and the artistic director of the Finnish design company Woodnotes.

Finnish furniture designer, born in 1932, came of age as the post-war boom was sweeping Europe in the late 1950s and 1960s. Most famous for his Ball Chair, which evokes the Swinging Sixties better than nearly any other piece of furniture design. Aarnio's work has meant an expansion of what can be done with plastics and fiberglass. The Pastil Chair and Tomato Chair followed and he scored another hit with the suspended Bubble Chair.

Tanja Sipilä is a Finnish designer who's ingenious milk and sugar set 'Newton' for Tonfisk has got world-wide recognition. Tanja is now part of the Finnished based design consultancy DESIGNMACHINE.

Finnish designer Harri Koskiken (1970– ) rose to prominence in the mid-nineties with his award-winning Block Lamp, an industrial lighting piece consisting of a lone light bulb encased within twin acrylic bricks. His Cosy lamp for Muuto and bent-plywood Fatty containers are but two standouts of the past decade.
