The innovative skyscraper, which is 82 stories tall, features an undulating shape designed to capture views of Chicago landmarks.
Located at 1811 Bel Air Road, Case Study House #16 was designed by Craig Ellwood in 1953. The residence has been meticulously maintained over the years by its two owners, and today it’s the only surviving Case Study design by Ellwood.
Husband-and-wife team Elaine and Stanley Yang of real estate and development firm Mini Inno discovered this 2,000-square-foot ranch home, and set about transforming it into an idyllic weekend retreat. Built in 1966, the home sits on 3.6 acres and, while the bones were good, it was a bit outdated in terms of style. The revitalized, Moroccan-inspired retreat is a sanctuary worthy of its soothing surroundings.
The master bedroom features a custom-made platform bed and curtains, a sconce with a rattan shade from Tine K Home, a vintage Turkish kilim rug, and Sika Design side tables.

Bofill's vision for this apartment building in coastal Spain drew on the work of the avant-garde UK-based architectural collective Archigram; conceptually, each of the building's 18 units was "plugged" into the central structural frame, allowing the modular living units to form a range of different configurations. Unlike Bofill's other work in the area, this project was painted a mossy green that contrasted with the clay tile roofs.
Near the port city of Alicante in Spain's Costa Blanca, Bofill designed a pink apartment block in the small town of Calp. Known for its beautiful beaches, the area became a popular tourist destination starting in the 1950s and ’60s, and La Muralla Roja was built to house 50 apartments on a cliff just five kilometers from the beach. With deep-set, narrow windows, strong geometric forms, and Mediterranean colors, the building is undeniably inspired by history but strictly modern in its minimalist ornamentation. The thick walls keep inner courtyards cool, and selectively placed windows keep out the strong Spanish sun.
C-Glass House by Deegan Day Design engages not only Philip Johnson’s Glass House and the Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe, but also the California legacies of Elwood, Koenig and others. Though its architectural lineage is self-evident, this glass house is as indebted to artists’ explorations of glazed enclosures as it is to the precedents of Johnson and Mies.
