Legendary Berkeley architect Bernard Maybeck built the single-family residence at 113 Purdue Avenue in Kensington, California, in 1949. The midcentury sits at the end of a private road and borders the sprawling Tilden Nature Area.

The facade consists of exposed concrete, Galvalume roofing, and cedar or torrefied wood coating. The homes are carefully positioned to keep other structures out of sight.

As a rug designer, Simon planned out the large blue dot on the bright blue Tretford carpet. Simon explains that this tough carpet is made with ribbed goats hair and has recently made a comeback after being a popular wall covering material in the ‘70s.

A bathroom inside a Florida property first built in the 1920s receives a renovation featuring mermaid-green subway tile.
The guest bathroom features bright turquoise Arcilla Field tiles by Ann Sacks and brass fixtures and fittings that will develop a patina over time. A skylight above the shower provides natural light and brightens the room.
The bathroom features terrazzo floor tiles—which have a similar pattern to the material used to construct the fireplace in the living room.
Remarkable for its walls of triple-glazed glass, Snorre Stinessen Architecture’s Ejford Cabin straddles two stone ridges on northern Norway’s Hallvardøy Island. Perched on a concrete slab, it intentionally capitalizes upon passive solar conditions and features thick insulation to minimize energy output.
In a twist on Tudor Revival, one of only a few styles permitted in the neighborhood they raised the living area above a terrace. “The layout was all about how to fit the program within the very particular limitations of this site,” says architect César Becerra.
The geometric shape of the roof was driven by the desire to capture a “perspective view” out into the landscape, through both windows and skylights. “The volumes of the roof extend that view out into the landscape,” says architect Peter Tolkin. “The angle and shape of these various views were all connected, which is how the shape of the roof structure got produced.” As a result, each volume has a unique shape and section.
Adjacent to the dining area, the family room features a modernized fireplace flanked by narrow picture windows at each end.
Along the front of the home, tiered landscape sections are bordered by panels of COR-TEN steel, with a central walkway and staircase leading up to the main entrance. The glassy front facade provides multiple vantage points for enjoying views of the active neighborhood.
