Renovation of a historic apartment in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg and its transformation
into a new Thisispaper Atelier.
A first-floor apartment in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, one of the most popular
neighbourhoods in Berlin, well-known for its rich history and undeniable beauty, is the
the location chosen for the new atelier of Thisispaper Studio and the home of the studio’s
owners.
The most important intention behind the project was to keep the design simple and honest.
We focused only on polishing the interior, not on changing it. Therefore, all the decorative
elements on the ceiling and the original flooring were preserved and only renovated. This
resulted in creating the perfect gallery space, as a white background which could be filled
with carefully selected objects.
The most crucial process - furnishing - was probably the greatest challenge. Thisispaper
Studio carried it out in cooperation with carefully selected brands that we admire and which
hold a special place in the universe of our inspirations and aesthetics.
The main space is divided into two rooms, the first one introducing a lounge atmosphere
with a modular sofa, which offers a space for more relaxed meetings. The other room is
utilized for more creative debates that take place at a massive, wooden table which plays
the main role in the space - encouraging discussions and teamwork.
Additionally, there is one smaller room, intended for more private conversations. Its
peaceful atmosphere was achieved by a full curtain flowing from the ceiling to the floor.
Here, one’s attention is immediately drawn to the main piece of furniture - a round table
with a glass top, which invites to more personal conversations in our team.
Another space on the opposite side of the apartment was reserved for private life. We
moved from Warsaw to Berlin at the exact moment of the first lockdown in March 2020. The
plans for Thisispaper Studio were slightly different at the beginning, and this time proved to
be the turning point for our team. As reality shifted, we were forced to adapt to the
changing circumstances. Since the overall atmosphere around COVID is rather unstable,
with new restrictions imposed every few months, we decided to combine both our family
and professional life in one space.
Each area in the atelier is characterized by the main piece of furniture, selected in
collaboration with designer brands COR, Hem and Sancal. We truly appreciate these three
main objects because of the vivid and unique character of each of them, which introduces
certain functions to the interior itself.
On the one hand, the interior is designed to respect its past, and on the other, we wanted to
create an authentic and functional space - to create, work, invite other creatives to
cooperate with us - all in the atmosphere of home, the most private space, where we all
could feel comfortable, accepted and where our minds can unwind.
New reality brings new challenges.
