Kasshabog Lake Cottage

From Sustain Design Architects Inc.

This 1,600 sq. ft. cottage gains from the existing cottage’s beautiful vista over the lake, with a simple and long addition oriented to the view. A wood and stone palette with exposed beams complement the surrounding scenery of stone and conifer trees. The colours and materials of the building and shell of the existing cottage merge with the landscape.

The owners of this cottage wanted to maintain and renovate the original cabin, adding space for their growing family. A new wing was created behind the cabin, stretching along the length of the hill to meld into the landscape and take full advantage of the view to the lake.

The new addition provides a master bedroom suite and a large living room, dining room and kitchen—all with large windows and sliding doors to maximize the view and airflow through the cottage. Back-to-back fireplaces create the division between the living and dining rooms. A big Rumford fireplace strikes the right ambiance in the living room, and a Temp-Cast masonry heater with pizza oven heats up the dining room in the winter months.

The exterior was finished in wood siding and stone, selected to match the stone around the property. The interiors use natural Douglas fir on the walls and ceilings, with dark slate tile on the floors for durability. Custom millwork provides functional storage spaces throughout, while lighting adds to the character of each space. The cottage is warm and inviting, providing ample space for family gatherings.
