Nestled on the border between Monterey and Carmel in central California, surrounded by an oak forest and a small stream, Casa Serena encapsulates the tranquility of the natural world that characterizes the area. Originally built by a local architect in the late 1970s, the house was designed with subtle nautical details, inspired by the original owner's naval career. While designing, renovating, and completing a degree in Science Illustration, the owner/designer lived in the house to be close to the breathtaking scenery of the Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur.

The latest reconstruction of the kitchen, bathroom, and living areas harmonizes the house's initial structure with the natural environment. Natural materials such as oak, soapstone, concrete, ceramics, and plaster were prioritized, as the design followed a biophilic approach. The all-electric house is now powered by a net zero solar system. Induction cooking and the preserved baseboard heating system keep indoor temperature and air quality comfortable throughout the year. The custom oak cabinetry features thoughtful details like round inset drawer pulls that mimic the original porthole windows, vertical in-drawer storage for pots and pans, and an adjustable wine rack that converts to accommodate vertical items such as cutting boards. Additionally, the new bathroom boasts fixtures with easily replaceable trims, for future owners to adapt and personalize the space as tastes change. The courtyard garden evolved to prioritize drought tolerant and native plants around the central fountain, which are well-loved by the neighborhood quail, deer, and hummingbird families. Finally, the original name sign, round stained glass window, building envelope, and floor plan were carefully preserved, maintaining the authenticity and history of Casa Serena.
