Bernese Farmhouse: Taking Inspiration from Man’s Best Friend

Scott and Lori Wallace had lived in their Orangevale house for more than two decades when we first met them, and hadn’t touched it since they’d first moved in. They had raised both of their children in that home and had built twenty years of memories along the way. But as recent empty nesters who’d finally sent their youngest off to college, they were ready to transform their outdated 1990’s home into their forever home.

Lori and Scott had very different design priorities. Lori had dreams of an all white kitchen and an re-imagined ensuite complete with a walk-in closet. Whereas, Scott just wanted a moody man cave where he could entertain friends and watch sports. Scott liked dark woods, dark metals, and lots of saturated colors. Lori wanted the opposite and had been pining away at “modern farmhouse” photos online.

The one thing they could agree on was how much they loved their two Bernese mountain dogs. These beauties were showstoppers - loving, kind and so dang sweet - so it wasn’t hard to see why they were such an important piece of their lives. We quickly noticed that the combination of colors that both Lori and Scott liked - white, blacks and browns - coincidentally aligned exactly with the palette of their two dogs. So we gave them a home inspired by something we knew they both already loved, a Bernese Farmhouse.
