The hot tub is a highlight of the home. “It was worth the investment,” says Kara. “Especially late at night when you can see the stars.”

The house is completely off grid. It operates on solar panels, wood-fire heat and water from the lake; there’s even a compost sewage system.

For the sake of affordability and durability, the architect employed vinyl flooring for $5,980 throughout the ADU. In the open-plan kitchen/dining/living area, a vaulted ceiling lends a feeling of luxury and spaciousness.

The guest bedroom, as well as other parts of the house, have a plywood accent wall. “My family's in the plywood business and they have been making plywood for over a hundred years,” says Holly. “This is not your typical Home Depot plywood. This is really clear with a nice veneer on it. So, we were able to do a special run of plywood that had a really beautiful grain to it, and it adds so much richness to our home.” The sconces are from Cedar & Moss.

The same oversized doors are in the primary bathroom, alongside a soaking tub from Victoria & Albert and porcelain In Essence “Sabbia” tile.

The backsplash tile is Dirk Elliot, and various decor items on the walls and shelves are from the couple’s travels in Indonesia, India, and Mexico.

To keep the home as healthy as possible, Greg didn’t use any paint or drywall.

Greg utilized cross-laminated timber to construct the home and for its interior finishes.

Sourced from Stûv and Novo, the wood-burning stoves complement the radiant heating system build into the concrete slab.

In addition to the 175-square-foot deck, Blend Projects also offers to build amenities like outdoor showers, saunas, and ADUs.

After more than 15 years spent in construction, high school friends Simon Fyall and Richard Egli started to imagine an architecture that blended in with the landscape of British Columbia better than industry-standard buildings.
