The house was designed to minimally interfere with the hilltop vegetation, which is what attracted the family to the site.

The rock outcropping in the backyard of this house in Victoria, British Columbia, influenced the design of the home’s addition.

A lofted drawing studio features a sawtooth roof with expansive skylights that frame the branches of a jacaranda tree overhead.

Plaster and wood give the loft texture at every turn.

Linden found the 4x4’ Italian-designed dining table on First Dibs. “It’s slightly too small to be a proper family dining table, it’s too big for a desk, but it works perfectly here… it’s the right ambiguity for an ambiguous space,” says Galán.

The kitchen cabinets are made from a pressed wood-fiber product. The countertop and backsplash are Caesarstone.

Not only was extra living space necessary for the growing family of four, but the existing house also failed to take advantage of the striking views that drew the couple to the site. The homeowners tapped architect Malcolm Davis of San Francisco–based Malcolm Davis Architecture to redesign and expand the dwelling without damaging the many established oak trees.

A built-in couch provides an additional perch to enjoy the surroundings.

The interior also features numerous local touches, including a pair of oak Krysset chairs in natural leather by the Norwegian furniture company Eikund.

Wrapped in glass on three sides, the Woodnest tree houses offer panoramic views of the surroundings mountains and fjord.

A cross section shows the solution for a raised bed and built-in seating. Both tree houses are identical in layout and design.
